Favicon It's too late to prune poinsettias - Orlando Sentinel

 31 Oct 2010, 12:39 pm
October 30, 2010|By Tom MacCubbin, IN THE GARDEN

Q: My poinsettia plants look good but I have not trimmed them. When should I do the pruning?

A: Poinsettia pruning time is over for this year, if you want flowers. The plants initiated the flowering process around the middle of October. Any pruning now would affect the blooms. Even though the plants were not pruned you are going to get flowers but the plants may be a little lanky this year.

Getting your poinsettias in shape starts during March with a trimming that takes the plants back to a foot or two above the ground. Then, they are fed and watered to encourage new growth. After each flush of growth, about a foot in length, the top 3- to 4-inches is removed. This sequence of growth and pruning is continued through August. At the end of August all pruning stops and the plants are allowed to mature and begin the flowering process during the fall.
